You’ll want to put this Creamy Keto Mushroom Sauce on just about everything! It’s rich and perfect, poured over a thick grilled rib-eye steak.
I’ve been making a different version of mushroom sauce at just about every restaurant I’ve ever worked in. Most restaurant recipes start with a high-carb gravy powder, with a small amount of cream and mushrooms added in – that’s the kind of sauce we’d rather avoid.
Are mushrooms keto-friendly?
Mushrooms on their own are not keto-friendly however, mushrooms are keto-friendly when cooked with other high-fat ingredients such as oil and cream. Mushrooms make an excellent addition to a keto diet due to their low carb content and high fiber.
This low-carb mushroom sauce recipe makes approximately 1 cup, which is 4 serves. 1 serving is approximately ¼ cup.
Keto Mushroom Sauce Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon of Butter
- 1 clove of Garlic, crushed
- 1 small Onion, thinly sliced
- ½ teaspoon of Salt
- Pinch of Pepper, ground
- 7 ounces of Mushrooms, thinly sliced
- 5 teaspoons of Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 tablespoon of Dijon Mustard
- ½ cup of Heavy Cream
- 2 tablespoons of fresh Tarragon, finely chopped
How to Make Keto Mushroom Sauce
- Place a saucepan over high heat, add the butter, garlic, onion, salt, and pepper and saute until the onions start to turn translucent.
- Add the mushrooms and saute for 3 minutes before dropping the heat to low.
- Add the Worcestershire sauce, dijon mustard, and cream. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the sauce thickens.
- Stir through the tarragon and serve.

How do you store mushroom sauce?
Mushroom sauce can be stored in the fridge for up to three days it is not suitable for freezing.
Reheat the sauce over low heat, as too high heat will cause it to split.

I was looking for a lectin free recipe and I sawpped out butter with ghee, plain unsweetened coconut yogurt for the cream and coconut aminos for the worcestershire sauce. This came out really good and will make again for sure. Thank you!Reply
So glad you enjoyed it, Pamela, we might try your suggestions next time we make it.

This sauce was insanely good! This is a keeper even if you are not doing keto, It is very rich and flavourful so a little goes a long way, I served over pork tenderloin medallions but would be really good with salmon or chicken, I didn’t have tarragon so used a pinch of fennel seed and some fresh parsley,Reply
Hello Kathy, thank you for your comment, so glad you like the sauce, we might give the fennel seeds a go ourselves some time.

I don’t like mushrooms or their flavour so I left them out and it was still an absolutely delicious sauce. My husband even went back for more, I will be naming this again.

Very yummy, smelled like a Olive Garden in the house. I did not have any tarragon, didn’t miss it. I was cooking for one and just had three large Portabella mushrooms and rotisserie chicken. I chopped the mushrooms in larger pieces sautéed in butter and added the onions and garlic and then made the cream base and added the rotisserie chicken to warm, it was wonderful.

Although I didn’t make it exactly as written, I am very pleased with this recipe. I suffer from debilitating fatigue and don’t have the energy to devise recipes on my own. I whipped this up and dumped in some leftover rack of rib meat I had to use up today. I’m am very thankful for this recipe. I can see creamed chicken in my near future.Reply
I’m so frustratingly picky. I hope to try this soon and I hope I like it. No matter what, I want to thank you for this recipe and the presentation of the recipe with the pictures.

Made this say nigh. YUM will definitely make it again. Thank you.Reply
Just delicious! My husband said this was restaurant level quality. I made it for a family dinner and it went over INCREDIBLY well. I love how there is plenty of proper seasoning. So many other “Keto” websites do not seem to think this needed. Perhaps for many, it is not needed, but we enjoy having wonderfully flavored meals.Reply
Hi Sunny,
Thank you for your kind words! I’m so glad your family enjoyed it.
